Smile4Autism Visual Support Guides
Communication Book
Keep the book where your child can reach it. Point to a picture as you say the word, then give your child time to communicate by pointing, touching, looking at, or handing you a picture. Respond to their message. You can use the sentence strip to combine pictures, such as “I want” plus an item.
Visual Schedule
Arrange the activity pictures in the order they will happen. Review the schedule with your child, then move or remove each picture as the activity finishes. You can use the “First–Then” section to show what is happening now and what comes next.
Token Board
Choose a goal and a reinforcer that are meaningful to your child. Explain or show what they are working toward, then add a token when they earn one. When the board is complete, provide the promised reinforcer.
First–Then Board
Place a picture of the first activity in the “First” space and a picture of what comes next in the “Then” space. Show the board before you begin, and follow through with the “Then” activity afterward.
Helpful reminder
Every child communicates in their own way. Respond to communication attempts and follow the recommendations of your child’s speech-language or education team.
